How to Show Full File Names and Extensions in "My Computer"

Setup My Computer to Show Full File Names and Extensions

1.      Open My Computer (double click from the desktop)

2.      Click on TOOLS for the drop down menu.           

3.      Select FOLDER OPTIONS                                     

4.      The FOLDER OPTIONS box opens                       

5.      Select the VIEW tab:                                            

6.      Make sure that                                                   

  • SHOW HIDDEN FILES AND FOLDERS shows a GREEN dot and

  • HIDE EXTENSIONS FOR KNOWN FILE TYPES does not have a GREEN CHECK in the box.

Click in the appropriate box to change the selection to match the list above.

7.      When you change any of the settings in Step 6, the
      APPLY button is active.                                       

Click APPLY to save your changes.

8.      Next, click OK to complete the operation.

You will need to close and REOPEN MY COMPUTER for the change to take effect and then show your complete file names and extensions.
