The sophisticated quality of the anthrax used in the letter to Senator Daschle suggests that the threat of bioterrorism has reached a new level previously viewed by many as unlikely. In recent testimony before Congress, RAND policy analyst John Parachini focused on the potential perpetrator of the recent anthrax attacks and weighed the bioterrorism threat.

Close to half of American adults reported having one or more substantial symptoms of stress in the hours and days immediately following the September 11 terrorist attacks, and nine out of ten had stress reactions to some degree, according to a RAND survey published in the New England Journal of Medicine. The report by Mark A. Schuster and others is published in the November 15, 2001 issue (345:1507-1512).
