Cartographic Information Section

The Cartographic Information Section of MSFRIC is responsible for all cartographic information support for Air University. This section enhances the educational function of Air University by providing maps and charts to students, faculty, and staff in residence at Maxwell/Gunter. Map support is also provided to AFJROTC and AFROTC detachments throughout the United States as coordinated through HQ AFROTC.

The 400,000+ item collection contains current maps and charts in both paper and digitized formats. The National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency (NGA), formerly known as the National Imagery and Mapping Agency (NIMA), and the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) are the primary sources of maps in the inventory. Secondary sources are the United States Geological Survey (USGS) and the state of Alabama.

The major part of the collection is the inventory of aeronautical charts from NGA. These are unclassified, current charts providing worldwide coverage as aeronautical charts and topographic maps in all scales. Digitized map data on CD-ROM is available.  "Digital Chart of the World", "Digital Terrain Elevation Data",  "Compressed ARC Digitized Raster Graphics" , Falcon View software and a Geographic Information System (GIS) are available for use in the Map Room.

The CIA is the source of all political maps. These provide current, worldwide coverage in paper format. Political maps are available in sizes from 8 1/2" x 11" to 34" x 43". This material is public domain, and the page size maps can be scanned onto user provided diskettes. A scanner is available for patron use in the section.

Gazetteers prepared and published by NGA for the United States Board of Geographic Names are available in the section. The entries show names and associated information for places and features such as cities, mountains, rivers, etc for most foreign countries.

Maps, charts and other cartographic information are issued to students and staff of Air University for official use. DMA products covering foreign territory at the scale of 1:250,000 and larger is restricted to employees within the Executive Branch of the U. S. Government.
