- In case-based instruction,
  - students are given a realistic case relevant to the course (medicine, managment, etc).
  - Students work through the case, typically outside of class, and decide what should be done.

- In problem-based learning

SIAM Inference Engine

- http://www.airpower.au.af.mil/airchronicles/cc/julie.html is the URL for the article on the SIAM engine that allows you to program in objective and subjective elements in a system (ex. the system could be centered around influences on Saddam's decision to stay in/leave Kuwait). Each element allows you to program multiple influences on it / by it, with adjustable probabilities, strengths of ties, justification/reasoning behind your ratings, etc. You might want to peruse the article just to get a view of a new technology being used on stock market and "influence"/subjective situational analysis.
- The SIAM system is free to DoD users, on a Sun computer (which many of the intel shops in DoD use), because the intel agencies paid for its development (two copies are in use in Bosnia as analysis tools). The PC version is due out shortly, but will cost BIG bucks because it is considered a new product, not covered by the government contract.
- For the cost of a Sun computer we could have this capability at AU (or use an existing AU-owned Sun computer).
- Potential for use in teaching analysis of threat and the complicated way in which stuff interacts (but with which you still may be able to get some improvement over just random chance re: guessing opponents next move or how he might react to yours)
