UNEP/GC.16/Inf.4 Page 161 CONVENTION ON THE PHYSICAL PROTECTION OF NUCLEAR MATERIAL Objectives To facilitate the safe transfer of nuclear material and to establish effective measures for its physical protection. Provisions The Parties undertake: (a) To ensure that during international nuclear transport, nuclear material within their territories, or on board a ship or aircraft under their jurisdiction is protected at the levels described in Annex 1 (art. 3); (b) Not to export nuclear material unless they have received assurances that such material will be protected during the international transport (art. 4, para. 1); (c) Not to import nuclear material from a state not a party to this Convention unless they have received assurances that such material will during the international nuclear transport be protected (art. 4, para. 2); (d) Not to allow the transit of their territories by land or internal waterways or through their airports or seaports of nuclear material between states that are not parties to this Convention unless they have received assurances that this nuclear material will be protected during international nuclear transport (art. 4, para. 3). Membership The Convention is open to all states, international organizations and regional organizations. The instruments of ratification, acceptance, approval or accession shall be deposited with the Director General or the International Atomic Energy Agency.
