Colonel Fred V. Manzo, Jr., US Army, is assigned to the Department of International Security Studies where he serves as the Director of the Air War College Regional and Cultural Studies Program. He is an instructor for National Security-Decision Making and Global Security. He joined the Air War College faculty in August 2010 following an assignment as the advisor to the Deputy Minister of Defense of Afghanistan. He is an Army Aviator and has served in numerous command and staff positions to include Platoon Leader, Company Executive Officer, Company Commander, Battalion Operations Officer, and Battalion Commander. He has operational experience in the Republic of Korea where he commanded 1st Battalion, 52nd Aviation Regiment (Flying Dragons). COL Manzo is a 1986 graduate of the United States Military Academy and holds a Masters of Science in Industrial Engineering from New Mexico State University and Masters of Strategic Studies from the Air War College.

Colonel Chris Marcell is a Leadership and Warfighting professor. His most recent assignment was as Chief of Combat Operations at the 609th Air and Space Operations Center at Al Udeid Air Base, Qatar, where he executed the Air Tasking Order for Operations ENDURING FREEDOM, IRAQI FREEDOM/NEW DAWN, the Horn of Africa and anti-piracy operations within the CENTCOM area of responsibility. Prior to that, Colonel Marcell commanded the United States Navy’s Training Squadron THREE, a Joint Specialized Undergraduate Pilot Training squadron at NAS Whiting Field, FL. He also commanded Cadet Squadron 20 at the United States Air Force Academy and served as the Chief of Standardization and Evaluation in the 34th Training Group. Colonel Marcell was also an F-15E Strike Eagle Formal Training Unit Instructor Pilot and Evaluator and served as a Mission Commander and Flight Lead in hostilities in Iraq and the Balkans. His first assignment was as a T-37 First Assignment Instructor Pilot. He is a Command Pilot with over 2900 flight hours in the F-15E, T-34, T-41 and T-37 aircraft. He is a 1989 graduate of the USAF Academy with a Master of Science in Economics. His Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University master’s thesis, The Effect of Combat Experience on the Acceptance of Female Aircrew in Combat Aircraft, was published by the USAF Academy.

Colonel John McCarthy, USA, is an instructor in the Department of Warfighting at Air War College. He also teaches in the Leadership Department. Prior to arriving at Air War College he served as Deputy Brigade Commander in the 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division and then Director of Operations and Agreements in the Office of Defense Cooperation, Ankara Turkey. Colonel McCarthy has commanded Infantry units from platoon through battalion level. He participated in combat operations in both Panama and Iraq. Colonel McCarthy has extensive experience training Soliders at the Individual Soldier through Brigade level, including commanding an Infantry Training Battalion at Ft Benning GA and serving as the Live Fire Senior Observer Controller and the Director of the Leaders Training Program at the Joint Readiness Training Center. Colonel McCarthy is a graduate of the Army War College and holds a Master of Science degree in Training Simulations from the University of Central Florida.

Colonel Thomas D. McCarthy, USAF, is a professor in the department of International Security Studies where he serves as the Director Air War College Culture & Language Program. He joined the Air War College Faculty in 2011 and is currently completing his PhD from The Fletcher School, Tufts University. His non-flying assignments include: AFIT PhD candidate at Tufts University, Military Aide to the President, Skunk works (A5XS) on the Air Staff, SAASS, and OSD office of the Deputy Secretary of Defense. Col McCarthy’s operational background includes special operations and rescue flying of MH-53 and HH-3E aircraft performing combat operations in: Bosnia, Kosovo, Africa, Operation Southern Watch, and Afghanistan as well as Partnership for Peace operations in Europe. Research interests include cyber domain theory, national security strategy, global security challenges, non-state armed groups, and strategic non-violence.

Colonel (ret.) Michael L. McKim is Director of Education Transformation for the Spaatz Center for Officer Education, as well as performing educational technology planning for Air War College. He retired from the Air Force Reserve in 2002, after 30 years of active and reserve duty. He served two tours in Germany in civil engineering -- maintaining over 400 buildings on 9 installations, designing and building wartime shelters, emergency response facilities, shopping centers, and base support facilities. He commanded a work force of 550 from 13 countries at Wiesbaden AB, and developed force protection plans for Ramstein AB. He negotiated co-located operating agreements with the German Air Force, base support agreements with US and German armies, and construction funding support agreements with NATO HQ. He served as civil engineering O&M chief for a US Army armored brigade. He has developed curriculum materials for and taught on the faculties of SOS (active duty) and ACSC (reserve) and AWC (civilian - distance learning, and resident electives). He developed and programmed more than two dozen computerized political and military simulations, played worldwide by more than 400,000 in US and allied nations. He developed web sites for AWC and various research centers, with over eight million downloads per month. He served as IMA to the commander of Eaker College for Professional Development. He has lectured on future technology and information issues at universities, and has presented papers on educational technology at national conferences. He was chosen by the Office of Net Assessment to represent the Air Force on a DoD panel, primarily flag officers, on the Revolution in Military Affairs. He is a graduate of SOS, ACSC, and AWC. His civilian education includes degrees in astronautical and aeronautical engineering (Purdue), international relations (Troy), and psychology (Auburn).

Dr. George Michael received his Ph.D. from George Mason University’s School of Public Policy. He is a professor of nuclear counterproliferation and deterrence theory. Previously, he was an associate professor of political science at the University of Virginia’s College at Wise. Prior to his career in academia, he served in both the U.S. Air Force and the Pennsylvania Air National Guard. He was also a Presidential Management Fellow during which he worked as an operations research analyst for the U.S. Army. In May 2005, he was the recipient of UVA-Wise’s Outstanding Research Faculty Award. He is the author of five books: Confronting Right-Wing Extremism and Terrorism in the USA (Routledge, 2003), The Enemy of my Enemy: The Alarming Convergence of Militant Islam and the Extreme Right (University Press of Kansas, 2006), Willis Carto and the American Far Right (University Press of Florida, 2008), Theology of Hate: A History of the World Church of the Creator (University Press of Florida, 2009), and The New Insurgents: The Rise of Leaderless Resistance and Lone Wolf Terror (Vanderbilt University Press, 2012). Dr. Michael has appeared on C-SPAN's Book TV segment three times. In addition, his articles have been published in numerous journals.

Dr. James Arthur Mowbray is Professor of Strategy, Doctrine, and Airpower, in the Department of Strategy at Air War College. He has a Ph.D. from Duke University, an M.A. from Wayne State University. His publications include articles in Encyclopedia of World Biography and papers on Royal Air Force Strategy, Air Force Doctrine, airpower in World War II. His previous teaching experience includes Auburn University at Montgomery, Troy University at Montgomery, Northrop Services, Inc., and Webber College. He is completing "Seven League Boots," The Seventh Army Air Force at War in the South, Central, and Western Pacific Ocean Areas, 1 November 1940-3 September 1945, and Atlas of the Pacific Air War, 1940-45 with Professor (Emeritus Air War College) Armin Ludwig.
