History
The Commander, Officer Training School, invites you to attend our 50th Anniversary Celebration from 5-7 February 2010 at Maxwell AFB, AL. We will commemorate 50 years of excellence and the graduation of class 60A, the first class to graduate from USAF Officer Training School.
Air Force Officer Training School (OTS) first opened its doors at Lackland AFB, TX in 1959 with a class of 89 trainees. It was a 90-day program of physical, academic, and military training to transform active duty, reserve, and National Guard enlisted personnel into quality commissioned officers ready to meet the dynamic mission of the US Air Force. When Officer
Candidate School (OCS) closed its doors in 1963,OTS became the sole organization for training officers, training as many as 7,894 new officers in 1967.
In September 1993, the school relocated to Maxwell AFB, AL as part of the Chief of Staff’s vision to align all officer education and training under Air University. In February 1997, OTS and Air Force ROTC were merged under the newly created Air Force Officer Accession and Training Schools (AFOATS), which in 2008 became the Jeanne M. Holm Center for Officer Accessions and Citizen Development. In addition to the Basic Officer Training (BOT) program, OTS also provides initial officership training for Air Force active duty, Air National Guard and Reserve medical officers, chaplains and lawyers through the Commissioned Officer Training (COT) program.
In August 2009, the Air National Guard’s Academy of Military Science relocated their initial officer training program from McGhee Tyson ANG base in Knoxville TN to the OTS complex at Maxwell solidifying OTS as a total force training location. During its 50 years, OTS has trained and commissioned more than 100,000 men and women who have answered their nation’s call and served in peace and war with the motto…“Always with Honor.”
