Instructor Opportunities At OTS HELP WANTED :
Commissioned Officer Training (COT) is looking for officers interested in impacting the future of the Air Force. COT is the Air Force’s 5-week initial indoctrination program for medical professionals, attorneys, and chaplains. To apply, you should be a Captain or a 1st Lieutenant within one year of promotion to Captain (IMA Majors may apply). We are looking for officers of diverse backgrounds (AFSCs) to work at COT as Flight Commanders (Flt/CC). Your education and experience offers COT students exposure to various Air Force career fields and operations. As a Flt/CC, you should be in good physical condition, be fairly comfortable with public speaking, and possess good writing skills and effective leadership/mentorship qualities. Instructor experience is preferred but not required.
Working at COT :
The role of the Flight Commander (Flt/CC) at COT is simple: Flt/CCs lead, train, motivate and evaluate a flight (anywhere from 12-16 students) of newly commissioned officers.
Lead: Provide guidance as a counselor, mentor, and role model
Train: Employ lecturing, guided discussion, classroom instruction, and case study teaching methods
Motivate: Help the students find the drive within themselves to make it through the training program
Evaluate: Provide periodic feedback for the students through formal and informal sessions and training reports, and after various leadership events
In the classroom :
Flt/CCs instruct in these areas: Profession of Arms, Leadership Studies, Military Studies, and Communication Skills.
Profession of Arms: Essential corporate knowledge for being an effective leader and Air Force Officer.
Leadership Studies: Leadership and management study and practice through readings and case studies.
Military Studies: Concepts and history centered around and unique to the Air Force.
Communication Skills: Military writing and briefing styles.
Outside of Class and After Hours Activities :
There are a few times when Flt/CCs are required to put in some extra hours. The first one comes with the arrival of a new class. As an Flt/CC, you can expect to meet your students the first 4 or 5 training days at approximately 0500; these first training days normally end at approximately 1830. Your first interaction with your flight is the day they arrive on campus. The first few days you may spend some extra time providing some basic military training instruction (uniform wear, grooming standards, and customs and courtesies) and/or reviewing your flight’s in-processing paperwork. This time varies between Flt/CCs and depends on flight performance and needs. During weeks two and three, you may spend extra time grading your flight’s various assignments and providing performance feedback. Towards the end of course, you will become involved with Aerospace Expeditionary Force (AEF) exercise, and you may spend a night in a deployed environment with your flight. During the final week or graduation week you will attend a formal dining out with the entire student wing. After the dining out the COT students graduate the next day and it's all over. However, most Flt/CCs will attend a casual flight dinner at a local area restaurant with their flight to celebrate their graduation.
Training :
Before "carrying" or "pulling" a class, you may attend Academic Instructor Course (2 weeks), Initial Qualification Training (4-5 weeks) and then Mission Qualification Training immediately following. The mandatory Qualification Training (IQT) provided by OTS is 4 weeks for active duty and 2 weeks for reservists. Once trained, you will begin carrying your first flight. Your Flt/CC training will continue throughout the duration of the course with mandatory In-Service Training (IST) conducted by subject matter experts just prior to big events such as, Leadership Reaction course (LRC), AEF, and graduation.
