All COT/RCOT trainees MUST report to training in conservative civilian clothes. Uniforms are not authorized for wear the day of your arrival. Upon arrival and throughout training, all trainees will be expected to adhere to the dress & appearance standards defined in AFI 36-2903. Click here to review.
COLD WEATHER GEAR (OCTOBER - MARCH CLASSES)
Trainees should plan accordingly and should strongly consider purchasing the prescribed cold-weather uniform items if attending COT/RCOT classes during October-March. Optional items include, but are not limited to those listed below (found in AFI 36-2903):
Physical Training Items:
- Short and long-sleeved white or light gray form fitting undershirts(i.e. spandex, lycra or elastic material) may be worn and visible under the short-sleeved PTU/IPTU shirt
- Short, mid and full length solid black or dark blue form fitting sportswear (i.e. spandex,
lycra or elastic) may be worn and visible under both the PTU/IPTU and optional IPTU
- Knit watch cap. If worn, will be plain, solid black, dark blue, or sage green
without logos (bandanas and other similar head-scarves/headgear are not authorized
unless due to medical waiver conditions).
- Gloves. Gloves will be black or dark blue leather, knitted, tricot or suede, or a
combination of leather, knitted, tricot, and suede and without logos.
- Scarf. The scarf will be black or dark blue, all wool or cotton simplex, with or
without napped surface, and less than 10 inches in width.
- Earmuffs. Earmuffs will be solid, black or dark blue, made of any material and
may wrap around either the top or rear of the head.
- Thermal Underwear. Desert sand, cream, or white thermal underwear may be
worn under the ABU. Thermal underwear will not be worn as an outer garment.
Thermal underwear will not be visible under the ABU trouser and coat except at the neck.
- Gloves (black or sage green). Gloves may be worn with all authorized outer
garments. They will be all one color, leather, knitted, tricot or suede, or a combination of
leather, knitted, tricot, and suede. Black or sage green gloves may be worn with the
ABU and all authorized outer garments to the ABU. Only black gloves
may be worn with the service dress uniform and all approved outer garments worn with
the blue service and service dress uniforms.
- Scarf (black). A scarf may be worn with all authorized outer garments except
the pullover and cardigan sweaters (when worn solely as an outer garment). The scarf
must be tucked in and will only be worn with an outer garment. The scarf will not
exceed 10 inches in width and can be knit, all wool or cotton simplex, with or without a

Male and female trainees should arrive with haircuts adhering to AFI 36-2903 standards. Refer to pages 16 - 18 in the link above.
Males should arrive clean shaven. Facial hair is not authorized during training.
Eyeglasses/contacts worn at OTS must comply with the standards described in AFI 36-2903. Click on the link above and review paragraph 6.3.2 for eyeglass/contact lens wear. You are allowed to wear contact lenses during training, however, there are some field events that DO NOT allow the wear of contact lenses. Please make sure you have a suitable pair of eyeglasses, with eyeglass straps, for these events.
Transition lenses are not authorized in formation. Ensure you bring a pair of transition free glasses with you to training.
Throughout the duration of your training you will be required to wear Blues, ABU's or PT gear unless you are exercising off-campus privileges on the weekend. You should bring a couple of changes of conservative civilian attire for attending flight dinners and outings with your classmates.
